Now with 40+ days of quarantine under our belts, nearly every winery, sommelier, and industry-related "expert" has ventured into the world of virtual interactions to keep eager consumers engaged – and, frankly, drinking more than ever.

Although the intentions of most are generally good, the overall execution has proven relatively lackluster, and in some cases, even downright bizarre. After scouring the world of virtual tours, we've found the good, the mediocre, and the straight-up weird.

The Comité Champagne recently put out a 360-degree virtual tour of the region, its cellars, and small villages. Although a handful of the video's segments don't particularly do the region justice (the cellar shots leave much to be desired), the overhead vineyard views and village tours provide a brief and beautiful escape through Champagne – and with a run time of just 6:59 minutes, the commitment is rather minimal. In my opinion, the best way to approach this tour is to pop a bottle, savor a flute while watching, and proceed to finish said bottle over the course of the evening – because if not now then when?

For an even lower level of commitment, New Zealand-based Spy Valley has also put out a 360 degree virtual tour of their facility, though this one will only run you 3:01 minutes of your life. In terms of aesthetics, the shooting and visuals in this video are much more precise and poppy than those of the Comité's video – though when comparing bright and lush New Zealand terroir to that of northern France, this doesn't come as too much of a surprise. The background music is far less dramatic (and a lot more tolerable) than the Champagne tour, so should you find yourself turning your attention away to pour yourself a glass, the ambience remains a bit more upbeat.

Those looking to virtually visit with a positive twist can head to Finger Lakes-based Lakewood Vineyards' Facebook page and tune into their wine and takeout pairing series, which was created to support local restaurants that are currently under forced closure. Each two-ish minute long video features a Lakewood staff member highlighting their top wine pairings for a specific category of takeout, which comes prepared from a local establishment. In addition to food and wine pairings, Lakewood has also created a Cook & Cork series (approx 10 minutes each), which airs on a weekly basis. This Chopped-inspired series features a face-off amongst three staff members, who compete against one another to create a unique meal to pair with a specific wine. For heartwarming family fun with low level of commitment – and a bit of kitchen inspo on the side – this small local winery is doing a great job.

And for the downright bizarre, look no further than Napa Valley-based Shafer Vineyards, who is offering a six-hour – yes, hours – long experience to relax with their sheep. While this may seem like a soothing background to some, for most of us, this form of virtual visit is just downright bizarre, though for urban dwellers looking for a taste of the country, this is just about as authentic as it gets. Grab a bottle of the estate's Cab and.. baaask in all of its glory? I don't even know. However, the idea of projecting this onto a big screen after a bottle or two does sound rather entertaining…

In addition to virtual tours, nearly every winery on planet Earth is offering some form of virtual tasting experience, whether in Zoom, Instagram Live, or one-on-one format. A handful of regions and appellations have regularly updated lists of upcoming virtual opportunities available on their websites (here's the Yountville one, for example).

On the importer and distributor side of things, a handful of companies have also been hosting virtual Zoom tours with producers within their portfolios. I recommend following Grand Cru Selections, Paris Wine Company, and Becky Wasserman Co. for some of the best options out there. These free chats, although more industry-focused, generally feature in-depth discussions with producers on viticulture and vinification specifics, as well as virtual vineyard tours and if you're lucky, sneak peeks into some of the world's most fetishized cellars.

Lastly, days spent virtually visiting (and excessively drinking) are certain to leave anyone feeling a bit on the… fuller side. For those in pursuit of balance, both literally and figuratively, scheduling in an upcoming wine tasting/yoga class with Vino Vinyasa is sure to offer some form of physical respite – though I recommend pursuing said physical activity before your day of wine-soaked virtual adventures.
