CLEVELAND, Ohio – For August, we sipped 10 wines from five countries and four vintages. All should be available in the Northeast Ohio retail market. Email what you like or don't enjoy. We also choose one each month as our favorite. Cheers!
Vina Real
Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España, Rioja, Spain; Tempranillo, 2016, $17
Earthy, mushroom notes come out right away in this delicious wine that has some spice and an extremely long finish. Our panel guessed $15, $20, and $20 to $22 on the price, so we consider this a very good value. "Creanza" on the label indicates oak aging. Tempranillo is a versatile grape that stands alone well or can be blended, and is one of the several varietals that are used in Rioja wines.
Hess Select
Hess Collection, North Coast, California; Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017, $19
Nice body with blackberry emerging. Has a little mocha, currant and some cedar. Not a tannic bomb but stood up to a meat dish.
Writer’s Block Pinot Noir
Steele Wines, Lake County, California; Pinot Noir, 2017, $18
We tasted blueberry, spice and molasses in this wine, which has a fair amount of tartness. Definitely not a typical California Pinot, nor is it a cherry bomb by any means. It held up to seared tuna pretty well. For those who like a lean example of this varietal.
Oak Farm Zinfandel
Oak Farm Vineyards, Lodi, California; Zinfandel, 2017, $23.99
Rich tasting, blackberry jam comes out, but it's not sugary sweet. Nice tobacco notes on the finish. It's just a little tannic. Fruit is expressed well - meaning, it isn't a sweet, cloying, jammy example of a Zin. Just under our monthly $25 threshold and tasting well. Beautiful bottle design as well.
Casillero del Diablo
Casillero del Diablo, Chile, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018, $12
Our tasting panel detected a lot of blackberry and smokiness with notes of violet. No big tannins or huge oak notes, so don't expect a California cab. Decent value, common menu find.

Insolia
Feudo Principi di Butera, Sicily, Italy; Insolio, 2015, $16
We tasted lime pith and subtle mineral flavors along with pear. It's acidic enough to stand up to food well (we paired with mustard chicken). Insolio is an ancient Greek grape that grows well in Sicily, close to the ocean. The "saline environment" helps it fend off mildew, as a Sicilian grower notes.
Scott
Scott Family Estate, Arroyo Seco-Monterey, California; Chardonnay, 2017, $20
On a 0-10 oakiness scale, this is about a 6/7. A little lemon comes through with the faint taste of Golden Delicious apples. Long, dry finish, good stand-alone for those of us who love Chars but as expected it held up well to a chicken dish.
Domaine Bousquet Reserve
Domaine Bousquet, Tupungato Uco Valley, Argentina; Malbec, 2018, $18
Made with organic grapes so I'd drink this one soon. Smoky, savory aroma. A bit herbal tasting with maraschino cherry on the finish. Moderate tannins come out on the back end. Nice effort. The grapes are grown near the Andes, whose weather creates unique growing conditions.
Left Coast
Left Coast Estate, Willamette Valley, Oregon; Pinot Gris, 2017, $18
Very clean-tasting lemon and lime, beautiful finish. One of our tasting pals detected pith and green apple, and got a hint of grapefruit. Delicious with fresh stone-fruit flavors. Four thumbs up from our tasting panel.
Sir Real
Chronic Cellars, California, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017, $15
Tastes more like a zin and not very tannic. We smelled raspberry - specifically, raspberry jam. Can go with a lot of foods - barbecue, burgers, pizza, tomato dishes. I'd prefer a Cab a bit drier, but this has its moments.
Favorite of the month: Some very good ones. Left Coast gets the hat tip.
