Whether you’re a red, white, rose, or an entirely equal opportunity wine drinker, having the right wine glass for your favorite pour of vino is key to elevating the experience. While you may not discriminate among your wines, the same cannot in fact be said about your drinking glasses.

Sure, there’s nothing wrong with pouring a mason jar of wine after a long day at the (home) office, but experts will tell you that in order to make the most out of your wine, you’ll want to pay close attention not only to the varietal, but to the vessel, too. As Argaux (a fabulous female-owned and run wine club) co-founders and sommeliers Arden Montgomery and Margaux Reaume told Prevention.com, “Glassware is made specifically for styles of wine, so that should be the first thing you ask yourself when shopping” for your drinking accessories.

Ian Cauble, one of just 202 Master Sommeliers in the world and one of the experts behind the SommSelect team, notes, “The glass a person chooses will have a major impact on their overall wine experience.” In much the same way that you wouldn’t dream of listening to your favorite album from a static-y radio station, Cauble told us, you lose part of the experience when drinking great wine from a less-than-great glass. “If you are investing your money in good bottles of wine, stemware should not be overlooked,” Cauble added. “The delicate aromas in wine volatize (from liquid to gas) when you swirl the glass, and those molecules hit our olfactory bulb (smell receptor) which then sends those messages to our brain.”

When it comes to buying wine glasses, there are four primary types of glassware that all wine lovers should be aware of, experts say: Champagne, All Purpose White, Burgundy, and Bordeaux (with both Burgundy and Bordeaux meant for red wines). Red wine glasses are, generally speaking, a bit larger, both in terms of height and circumference. Why is this, you ask? Largely because red wines tend to be more assertive in flavor and aroma, which means that a larger glass is better-suited to capturing and releasing those fantastic smells.

And then, of course, there’s the ongoing stemmed versus stemless debate; Montgomery and Reaume note that deciding between the two is largely a personal preference. “The purpose of the stem is to keep your hands clear of contact from the part of the glass which the wine touches to prevent your body heat from affecting the temperature of the wine,” the duo notes. “At the end of the day, it's a personal preference but if you're trying to keep your rose chilled, we'd suggest using glassware with a stem.”

Price point should also be kept in mind when selecting your ideal wine glasses. After all, as Theo Rutherford, Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits’ in-house sommelier and pairing expert told us, you don’t necessarily have to have all four types of wine glasses in your cabinet. In fact, Rutherford noted, the Bordeaux glass can be used for both red or white wines (though their sizes will differ). And though you could certainly spend hundreds of dollars on your stemware, not all great wine glasses cost a small fortune. Read on for our curated list of best wine glasses to shop in 2020:

1

Best Overall

Schott Zwiesel Pure 23.4 Ounce Burgundy Glasses (Set of 6)
amazon.com

$81.99

A favorite of the Argaux team, Schott Zwiesel makes beautiful glasses for all occasions, but their Tritan Pure Burgundy glass is particularly aesthetically pleasing. The German-made glasses have a dramatic angle that make the glasses seem a bit more unique and modern, and this particular collection has a 23-⅖ oz capacity. To keep these glasses particularly sparkly, Schott Zwiesel uses Tritan Crystal, which has both titanium and zirconium for added durability and clarity. These glasses are also dishwasher-safe. Cauble drinks most of his Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo wines from a burgundy glass, which are often used for “more delicate, floral wines with lighter color.”

2

Best Value

Libbey Signature Kentfield Estate All-Purpose Wine Glasses (Set of 4)
amazon.com

$47.99

Proving once and for all that great wine glasses can come at remarkably affordable price points is Libbey, whose delightful all-purpose stemware is loved by both experts and less discerning wine enthusiasts. This particular all purpose glass fits many of Santa Margherita’s Wine Educator, Kristina Sazama’s, recommendations for a great glass. All purpose glasses, Sazama tells Prevention.com, are tulip-shaped with a “wide bowl to allow for more aeration, pulling out more subtle flavors, and focusing those nuances directly to the wine drinker’s nose and palate.” This is a somewhat smaller all purpose glass, so stick with the whites and roses here, but a larger version will serve your reds well.

3

Good for Red Wines

Riedel Vinum Cabernet/Merlot Wine Glasses (Set of 2)
amazon.com

$59.00

For a (somewhat) more affordable Bordeaux wine glass compared to #9 below, designed with merlot and sauvignon varietals in mind, we choose Riedel, whose classic Vinum wine glass was first introduced over three decades ago. The Vinum was actually the first varietal-specific machine-made glass on the market, and Cauble calls this glass the “go-to classic stem.” Generally, Cauble tells us, “Bordeaux stems are taller and the mouth of the glass has less width than a Burgundy stem. This allows the aromas to be quickly delivered to the drinker,” which makes them ideal for darker colored wines with more oak and higher alcohol content.

4

Good for White Wines

Spiegelau Willsberger White Wine Glasses (Set of 4)
amazon.com

$58.85

This may look like an all-purpose glass, but Spiegelau, the decades-old brand from Germany, specifically shaped this glass to allow for the maximum development of white wines’ flavors and aromas. With a 12.9 oz capacity, this more delicate piece of stemware has a beautifully long stem that looks effortlessly chic in any place setting. The glass is made of lead-free crystal and dishwasher safe.

5

Best for Champagne

Riedel Ouverture Champagne Glasses (Set of 2)
amazon.com

$25.47

Well-loved brand Riedel makes just about every great wine glass list for good reason; its products are not only elegant and timeless, but quite affordable, too. The 300-year-old family-owned crystal company is well-known for both its machine and handmade offerings; the glasses from the Ouverture collection come from machines (which allows them to be a bit less expensive), but they’re no less delicate than the handmade versions. Thanks to the relatively large size of the bowl (even in the champagne glass), you’ll be able to experience all the aromas of your favorite glass of bubbly. Plus, all Riedel glasses are dishwasher safe.

6

Best Value for Champagne

Riedel Mixing Champagne Glasses (Set of 4)
Riedel amazon.com
$49.90

$29.99 (40% off)

For your next champagne brunch, the Riedel Mixing Champagne Glass comes highly recommended by Julia Prestia, a wine producer and owner of Lambrusco producer Venturini Baldini. The mixing champagne set has what Prestia describes as an “egg-shaped glass,” and is particularly well-suited for sparkling wines like a lambrusco (a sparkling red wine that will certainly change your life). These glasses are also relatively inexpensive, and like the rest of Riedel’s lineup, beautifully made without being overly delicate.

7

Best Stemless Glasses

Rastal Harmony Wine Glasses (Set of 6)
amazon.com

$49.95

If you’re looking for an elegant and affordable stemless option, the Rastal Harmony lineup is an excellent place to start. The small mouth tapers to a large bowl, which helps to concentrate the aromatics of your favorite wine (red wines will probably work best in these glasses). While you could use these glasses as stemless offerings for your favorite bottle of vino, they also double as cocktail and beer glasses for a more versatile range of uses. The lead-free crystal is also dishwasher safe.

8

Best Value for Stemless Glasses

Crate and Barrel Tour Stemless Wine Glasses (Individual)
crateandbarrel.com

$9.95

Another great option comes from tried and true German brand Schott Zwiesel, whose Tour Stemless Wine Glasses maintain all the benefits of a beautiful, modern glass without the stem (which always makes caring for and washing the glasses easier). The bold, edgy, and decidedly angular design is handcrafted with Tritan crystal (scratch and chip-resistant) in Germany, and looks right at home both at your fanciest dinner party and at a casual (boozy) breakfast.

9

Best Investment

Zalto Denk'Art Bordeaux Glasses (Individual)
amazon.com

$59.00

If you’re looking to splurge a bit (or a lot) on your wineglass, Zalto is certainly the pick for you. The all-purpose Bordeaux glass instantly elevates just about any wine you’re drinking, and will certainly help you make the most out of the fine wines aging in your (or your parents’) wine cellars. The Denk’Art collection is mouth-blown and lead-free, and is delicately balanced for a very comfortable fit in your hand. And while you may think that you have to hand-wash these babies, they’re actually dishwasher-safe. This particular Bordeaux glass is best-suited for a red wine.

10 Richard Brendon Jancis Robinson Wine Glasses (Individual)

gracioushome.com

$112.00

If you’re looking for wine glasses to gift (either as the gifter or the receiver), the Richard Brendon and Jancis Robinson collaboration that gave way to these beautiful all-purpose pieces of stemware are bound to impress. Unfortunately, their price tag is similarly impressive. Made to be truly all-purpose (the glassmakers note that these pieces are varietal-agnostic), the glasses are incredibly lightweight and thin, both in terms of the stem and the thickness of the bowl itself. The rounded glass looks more classic than the sharply angled modern varietals, and offers a timeless elegance and drinkability. Surprisingly, these glasses are dishwasher safe, though they’re so beautiful that you may not feel comfortable sticking them in your machine.
