Geddes, N.Y. — A snowstorm can’t stop Central New Yorkers from seeking a taste of the New York State Fair.

That includes bagged wine slushies on a 31-degree day in May.

Hundreds of drivers are waiting in the Orange Lot in Geddes today during the second day of the State Fair Food Fest to buy state fair staples: sausage sandwiches from Big Kahuna; hot fried dough from Villa Pizze Fritte; and satisfyingly sweet wine slushies from Ashley Lynn Winery. By 1:30 p.m., over half of the Orange Lot in Geddes was filled with three long lines of cars moving at a steady crawl.

The pop-up State Fair food drive-thru started three weeks ago when Pizze Fritte parked its signature, triangular-shaped food stand in a parking lot at the corner of Bridge Street and Erie Boulevard East in DeWitt. Residents tired of being cooped up inside during the coronavirus pandemic happily waited in long lines to pick up bags of the vendor’s fried dough.

After Pizze Fritte’s had a second successful weekend, Big Kahuna and Ashley Lynn Winery decided to join the fun.

Two hours into the second day of the State Fair Food Fest, snowflakes were flying in the Orange Lot. But with Bob Marley’s “Buffalo Soldier” blasting from speakers and the smell of fried food wafting from the stands, it felt a little bit more like summer.

The State Fair Fest is open until 8 p.m. today. It’ll be open again on Mother’s Day from noon to 8 p.m.
