Bringing people together may seem harder now than ever before. Social distancing is the law of the land during a pandemic, but in Brockport, some ladies believe they've found the perfect solution.
In communities across the Rochester area, folks may have noticed random bottles of wine and other treats showing up at their doorstep. In west side towns, many of the gifts are the result of a sisterhood on a mission.
"I feel like we should always connect with our neighbors and should always have that sort of kind and generous heart and spirit,” Karoline Pratt said.
Pratt got the idea several weeks ago to begin a Facebook page, where a small group of friends could leave their address and deliver wine to each other. She called it 'Sisterhood of the Traveling Wine.' By the first weekend there were a few hundred members, and the group's now grown to nearly 4,000.
"It's kind of surreal," she says. "You'd never think it would explode the way it has."
The goal of the group is to purchase wine requested by members, then try to deliver it, anonymously. Consider it the adult version of 'ding-dong-ditch.'
"You go up to the door, you knock and you run away," says Brooke Borelli. "And you make someone happy."
Several west side wine and liquor stores have embraced the Sisterhood of the Traveling Wine. Some offer group members discounts on their purchases.
The original group, because of the widespread interest, now has numerous sister factions. Other groups have formed as well, delivering not only wine, but liquor, beer and other treats.
For these women, wine really does bring people together.
"This has given us a way to reconnect with friends and neighbors we may not know and just put a smile one someone’s face," Pratt adds. "It’s nice to have a little surprise at your doorstep."
"We get so many posts a day of just positivity," says Missi Vache. "'I went out and wined today,' or it was 'I was wined today.' So it’s been really fun."
So if you see someone running from your porch these days, it might not be a bad thing. You might just be getting ‘wined.’ Something we can all raise a toast to.
"I do hope it continues," Pratt says. "But even if it’s just for now, just to get people through this crazy time, I’m happy."
